Public Library Atrium Marble
Full honing and polishing revitalization of an original 1920s Vermont Danby marble floor in a public library's central atrium and reading hall, honoring architectural heritage while returning brilliance lost to decades of public use.
The Need
The library's original marble, a focal point of the building's Beaux-Arts interior, had been worn hazy by a century of visitor foot traffic and improperly maintained with harsh janitorial chemicals.
Service Performed
Multi-stage diamond honing from 100 to 800 grit to remove all scratches and haze, followed by crystallization polishing and a penetrating sealer to restore original clarity and sheen.
Timeline
5-day weekend and evening execution across two sections, keeping the library fully open to the public throughout the restoration project.
The Challenge
Vermont Danby marble is softer than Italian varieties and particularly vulnerable to acid etching from common floor cleaners. Decades of custodial staff using pH-stripping products had created a deep, milky haze across the entire surface that no topical wax could disguise. Restoration work had to proceed while the building remained open, with dust-free equipment required near rare book collections in adjacent reading rooms.
Our Marble Polishing Process
Stone Assessment
Hardness testing and scratch depth measurement across the full surface area to determine the starting diamond grit for this specific marble grade.
Progressive Honing
Sequential diamond abrasive pads from 100 through 800 grit remove all acid etch, scratches, and surface irregularities to produce a flat, uniform plane.
Crystallization
Marble crystallization powder is worked into the surface at 1500–3000 RPM, chemically reacting with the calcium carbonate to produce a deep, reflective gloss.
Impregnating Sealer
A fluorocarbon impregnating sealer penetrates the stone matrix to repel water and oil-based soiling while remaining fully reversible and invisible at the surface.
"Our patrons have been stopping to remark on the floor. It's become a conversation piece, just as it was when the building first opened."
