Surgical Suite Grout Overhaul

Full grout removal and re-installation using antimicrobial epoxy grout across 48 operating and procedure rooms, eliminating pathogen harboring in compromised joints to meet strict infection-control standards.

New epoxy grout after overhaul

The Need

Aged cementitious grout in 48 surgical suites had become permanently stained and micro-cracked, harboring pathogens that exceeded acceptable infection-control thresholds.

Service Performed

Mechanical grout removal, joint cleaning and preparation, and full re-installation using Laticrete Spectralock antimicrobial epoxy grout rated for surgical environments.

Timeline

16-day schedule across four ORs per night with 24-hour cure between sessions, coordinated with the facility's surgical scheduling team.

The Challenge

Standard cementitious grout, even when routinely cleaned, is inherently porous, creating microscopic reservoirs for bacterial colonization in high-risk surgical environments. Two suites had already been temporarily decommissioned by the infection-control committee. CATA had to complete work overnight without chemical off-gassing in adjacent active ORs, using only low-VOC materials.

Methodology

Our Grout Repair Process

01 / REMOVE

Grout Removal

Oscillating multi-tool and grout saw extraction removes all existing grout to depth without damaging tile edges or the adhesive bond.

02 / PREP

Joint Sanitization

Vacuuming and hospital-grade disinfectant flush of all open joints ensures zero residual contaminants before new material is placed.

03 / REGROUT

Epoxy Installation

Laticrete Spectralock antimicrobial epoxy grout is packed, floated, and tooled to a smooth, flush finish that resists bacterial growth permanently.

04 / VERIFY

Infection-Control Sign-Off

Each suite is inspected by the facility's infection-control team before being returned to service, with documentation provided for Joint Commission records.
